Another Stony Mountain Institution inmate has died while in custody — the second this week.
Shane Franklin Kruchak, 50, was found dead Thursday. He began serving a sentence of slightly more than two-and-a-half years for manslaughter on Dec. 4, the Correctional Service of Canada said Friday. His next of kin have been notified.
Kruchak was arrested in Thunder Bay in late 2021 and charged with second-degree murder and breach of probation after a 35-year-old local man was fatally stabbed.
The stabbing happened on a lane on the 200 block of May Street South on Dec. 18, and the victim was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Kruchak was arrested at a nearby apartment, the Thunder Bay Police Service said at the time, adding the two men knew each other. Kruchak later pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Another inmate, 54-year-old Michael McKay, died Monday, and his death was announced Wednesday. He had been serving a sentence of slightly more than six years since Dec. 10, 2020.
McKay was serving time for six breaking-and-entering offences and a single count of failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking or recognizance. McKay was convicted in a Winnipeg courtroom.
As with all inmate deaths, the CSC will review the circumstances of both cases.
