A 14-year-old boy is facing several gun-related charges after a brazen daytime shooting in the North End last month.

The Winnipeg Police Service announced the arrest in a news release Saturday.

Police said the teen was involved in a shooting on Feb. 19 in the William Whyte neighbourhood that was partially captured on video and shared widely on social media.

At about 4:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Manitoba Avenue and McKenzie Street after reports of a shooting.

Police said investigators learned a male youth, accompanied by another boy, shot at a home in the 600 block of Manitoba.

“Unknown individuals within the residence returned gunfire,” the news release said.

Officers located the boy in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue with a gunshot wound to his lower body. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable. He has not yet been charged in the incident, police confirmed Saturday.

A short time later, officers located and arrested the 14-year-old boy near Flora Avenue and McKenzie Street. A firearm was located nearby, police said. The teen accused was detained in custody.

Police are still searching for other suspects in connection to the shooting.

Insp. Elton Hall, commander of the police’s north district, told city council’s Lord Selkirk-West Kildonan community committee last month that “we may have a gang situation brewing,” following several shootings in the area within about 10 days, including the Feb. 19 incident.

He said city police are stepping up patrols in the area to thwart gang-related violence.

Police said Saturday a 61-year-old man was arrested Feb. 27 after a home in the 600 block of Manitoba was searched as part of an investigation into gang activity and drug trafficking in the area.

Police seized a Ruger shotgun, several rounds of ammunition and drug paraphernalia.

The suspect, who is facing numerous firearm charges, was released from custody. His name was not released.
