Two Free Press reporters have been nominated for a National Newspaper Award for their months-long investigation into the state of child care in Manitoba and related underlying issues.

The six-part series by Katrina Clarke and Jeff Hamilton was published in June. The series — called Building Blocks, Crumbling Foundation — is nominated for the George Brown award for investigations.

“Investigative reporting like this does not come cheap, as the series involved months of work. And you certainly won’t find this kind of public service journalism on Facebook, X or TikTok. But what Katrina and Jeff delivered is reflective of the Free Press commitment to deliver what Manitobans need from the oldest newspaper in Western Canada,” editor Paul Samyn said.

The other nominees in the category include Robert Cribb, Wendy-Ann Clarke, Declan Keogh and Owen Thompson of the Toronto Star for their reporting on a program meant to fund mental health care for First Nations and Inuit people.

Terry Pender of the Waterloo Region Record is nominated for “exposing the role of the Mennonite Central Committee in bringing thousands of Nazi war criminals to Canada after the Second World War.”

Winnipeg photographer David Lipnowski was nominated in the feature photo category for a Canadian Press image of people giving a phone the finger while posing for a selfie with then-prime minister Justin Trudeau at Folklorama.

Shane Gross of the Globe and Mail was nominated in the same category for his photo of a beluga whale trying to get a taste of his camera in Churchill.

Frank Gunn of The Canadian Press was nominated in the sports photo category for an image of Toronto Argonauts receiver Dejon Brissett flipping in the air after being upended by Winnipeg Blue Bombers defensive back Tyrell Ford during the 111th Grey Cup in Vancouver.

The NNAs, which have been honouring the best in Canadian journalism since 1949, will be announced at a gala in Montreal on April 25. The Globe leads all newspapers with 16 nominations, followed by the Star with 15 and Montreal’s La Presse with 13.
