The end of an era looms for the Hudson’s Bay Co. in Manitoba.

Winnipeg’s remaining two locations — at CF Polo Park and St. Vital Centre — will close by June 30 unless Hudson’s Bay can find a long-term fix to its financial problems, including nearly $1 billion owed to dozens of creditors.

Canada’s oldest company filed for creditor protection on March 7. It was in court this week asking for permission to begin liquidating all but six of its 80 stores nationwide starting on Monday.

Winnipeg’s remaining two Hudson’s Bay Co. locations — at CF Polo Park and St. Vital Centre — will close by June 30.

The liquidation process will also impact Saks Off 5th, which HBC owns through a licensing agreement, at Outlet Collection Winnipeg in the south end of the city.

For now, three stores in Ontario, including the flagship location on Yonge Street in Toronto, and three more in the Montreal area, will be saved.

Hudson’s Bay lawyer Ashley Taylor told The Canadian Press those six locations could eventually close, but if the company can secure more funding, it may be able to save additional locations.

Some 9,364 jobs hang in the balance, with most of those in Ontario.

The Bay expects liquidation to wrap up by June 15.
