A member of the Canadian Armed Forces is facing charges after he allegedly coerced a child into engaging in sexual activity and took pictures of the victim while undressed.
The Winnipeg Police Service’s internet child exploitation (ICE) unit launched an investigation in February into child pornography that had been uploaded and shared on various online platforms.
After identifying an internet subscriber, the WPS and military police executed a search warrant at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg, also known as 17 Wing, on Wednesday. They arrested a man and seized multiple electronic devices.
An investigation determined the man photographed an undressed child who was known to him between May 2018 and April 2019, the WPS said in a news release Thursday.
“The accused subsequently uploaded and shared the images using social platforms,” the WPS said.
Investigators learned the identity of the child on the day of the arrest and determined the man had coerced the child to engage in sexual activity in 2020, police said.
He has been charged with four child pornography offences and invitation to sexual touching.
The man was released with conditions prohibiting access to the internet and being in contact with anyone under 18. The WPS did not release his name to protect the identity of the youth involved.
