Four people were hurt in a series of stabbings between late Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday.
City police were sent to an area near Dakota Street and Abinoji Mikanah after a victim in his 20s was robbed and stabbed by a man he didn’t know at about 5:45 p.m. The injured man was taken to hospital in stable condition.
At 7 p.m., a man in his 40s was cutting grass at his home on the 500 block of Henderson Highway when a stranger armed with a machete demanded his sunglasses. The victim was struck with the machete, and the other man rode off on a bike. An off-duty police officer who was nearby intervened, called for help and chased the man. Officers eventually made an arrest.
A 28-year-old man is charged with robbery, possession of a weapon and violating a court order. He was detained in custody, the Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release.
“These are robberies that have turned quite violent,” spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon said of the attacks on Abinoji Mikanah and Henderson Highway.
At 9:30 p.m., officers were sent to a reported stabbing that happened amid a “group confrontation” on the 300 block of McKelvey Street. A man in his 40s was taken to hospital in unstable condition and upgraded to stable. No one has been arrested.
At 3 a.m. Thursday, police were sent to the area of Portage Avenue and Vaughan Street after a man in his 40s was stabbed. He was taken to hospital in stable condition.
The WPS asked anyone with information about the three incidents where no one has yet been arrested to contact its major crimes unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477 (TIPS) or online.
