A Winnipeg man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for strangling a woman to death in New Jersey almost 30 years ago.

Robert Creter, 61, who had originally been charged with first-degree murder, was sentenced last week after pleading guilty in May to aggravated manslaughter in the first-degree.

Creter will have to serve 85 per cent of his sentence before being able to seek parole.

Tamara Tignor, 23, was last seen getting into an orange van in New Jersey on Nov. 4, 1997.

New Jersey prosecutors said in a statement that when Creter was arrested, he said “I have had nightmares about this day happening for almost 30 years.”

Tamara (Tammy) Tignor, 23, was last seen getting into an orange van in Newark on Nov. 4, 1997. Her body was found later that day about 50 kilometres away at Washington Valley Park in Bridgewater.

It wasn’t until DNA evidence, taken from under Tignor’s fingernails, was submitted for advanced testing in February 2023, that police caught a break — Creter was identified.

Police said that until then, Creter had never been a suspect, but further investigation found at the time he was working for a Bridgewater moving company that used orange vans.

Creter, who moved to Manitoba in 2022, was arrested in Winnipeg on June 27, 2024, and extradited to the United States five months later.

Besides local police, in a statement, the State of New Jersey also thanked the RCMP for their assistance.
