A 28-year-old man accused of trying to stab a security guard at a Winnipeg grocery store Saturday afternoon was charged in two knifepoint robberies last month, court records show.
The Winnipeg Police Service said the attempted stabbing occurred at about 5:15 p.m., when the suspect tried to leave the store, in the 600 block of Stafford Street, without paying for meat.
The suspect punched the guard, who suffered minor injuries to his face, and fled empty-handed.
Police said officers seized a knife when they arrested a belligerent suspect in the 100 block of Osborne Street about 45 minutes later.
He was later identified through fingerprint analysis as Julian Joseph Wood, and charged with robbery, possessing a weapon, obstructing a peace officer and four counts of failing to comply with a release order.
Wood was held in custody.
He was charged last month after a pair of knifepoint robberies in St. Vital.
Police allege Wood was removed from a lounge on the 1100 block of St. Mary’s Road on the night of July 25 due to “belligerent behaviour.”
Police said he then went to a fast-food store on the 600 block of Dakota Street and chased employees around with a knife before leaving empty-handed.
Wood is accused of returning to the first business and stealing a 15-pack of beer from a vendor at knifepoint.
A review of court records showed Wood was charged with attempted robbery with a weapon, robbery with a weapon and three counts of failing to comply with conditions of a release order.
He remained in custody on those charges until July 29, when court records show he was released.
The Winnipeg Police Service was opposed to his release, a spokesperson said.
Wood’s previous convictions include an August 2020 guilty plea for breaking and entering into a home, and a guilty plea for assault with a weapon in November 2018, among others.
