Manitoba’s chief medical examiner has called three inquests into the deaths of three men.
Lester Miles, 22, died after an altercation with RCMP on July 2, 2022. The Shamattawa man was shot multiple times and was taken by STARS air ambulance to Health Sciences Centre, where he was declared brain dead on July 5, 2022.
An autopsy found Miles died of gunshot wounds and the chief medical examiner deemed the death a homicide.
The two other inquests announced Wednesday involve inmates who died in custody.
Nathan Otke, 36, was found unresponsive in his cell at Stony Mountain Institution after an assault on Jan. 1, 2022. He was taken to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre and was diagnosed with a skull fracture and traumatic brain injury. He died on Feb. 7, 2022.
RCMP have since charged five people in his death.
In the third case, Tyson Dumas, 34, was found unconscious at the Pas Correctional Centre, after two altercations with other inmates on May 25, 2022. He was taken to Health Sciences Centre and died on June 4, 2022. An autopsy revealed Dumas suffered a severe brain injury.
The inquests seek to learn more information about the deaths and prevent similar instances from happening in the future.
The dates and location of the inquests will be released at a later date, a news release stated.
