Winnipeg firefighters were kept busy Sunday and early Monday as they battled four blazes across the city in short succession.

The first fire broke out just after 6 p.m. in an house under construction on the 1100 block of Garfield Street North, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service said.

Crews found the building engulfed in flames when they arrived, but got the fire under control by just before 6:3o p.m. Fire officials issued an order for the structure to be demolished.

Then at about 8:45 p.m., firefighters raced to Newcastle Road in Fort Richmond, where they found smoke coming from house. They got the fire under control by just after 9 p.m.

The residents had evacuated on their own. WFPS said the fire was likely caused by someone attempting to thaw frozen pipes with a torch, which the service warns should never be attempted.

At about 3:15 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire at a vacant commercial and industrial building on Myrtle Street off Notre Dame Avenue.

Firefighters first attacked the blaze from the outside, before they got the flames down enough to get inside and douse the fire. It was declared under control by about 4:45 a.m.

No one was inside at the time.

The last fire broke out at about 4:20 a.m. in a vacant, 2 1/2-storey house on the 600 block of William Avenue near the Health Sciences Centre.

Firefighters quickly got the blaze under control and found no one inside the house.
