The City of Winnipeg is inviting people of all ages to submit names for 12 heavy machines, and a team of pathway plows, used to clear snow.

Other Canadian cities, including Edmonton and Kamloops, have held similar contests.

People can make submissions online through Dec. 5 to submit names for six grading machines and six loaders. Online voting on 30 suggestions chosen by the city will be open from Dec. 8 to Dec. 31.

The 12 individual winners will be notified on Jan. 7 and will be invited to an announcement on or around Jan. 13. Custom name plates will be printed for the winners as keepsakes, the City of Winnipeg said in a news release Thursday.

“Winters are long and cold, and can be a bit dull,” public works committee chairwoman Coun. Janice Lukes said in the release.

“This is our way of adding a little fun and excitement to these cold months.”

The names chosen in Edmonton included Blizzard of Oz, Buzz Iceclear, Ctrl+Salt+Delete, Darth Blader, Mr. Plow and Snow-Be-Gone Kenobi.

The human-powered, walk-behind plows — relatively new to Winnipeg — are used to clear pathways for pedestrians and cyclists, the city’s website said.

“We’re looking for creative classrooms to submit their best team name for this group of plows,” the release said.

The winning class will be invited to a pizza party at city hall with Mayor Scott Gillingham.

Individual and classroom entries can be submitted on the city’s website.
