Two 14-year-old boys have been charged with aggravated assault after a student was stabbed at a Portage la Prairie high school.
The victim, 15, was wounded during a confrontation between a group of boys in the student parking lot at Portage Collegiate Institute at about 3:50 p.m. Thursday.
He was taken to hospital in stable condition and “is expected to make a full recovery,” Manitoba RCMP said in a news release Friday.
PORTAGE COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE
A 15-year-old student was stabbed in a parking lot at Portage Collegiate Institute after classes were dismissed Thursday.
The student sought help from school staff members, who gave the teen first-aid before emergency crews arrived, Portage la Prairie School Division superintendent Pamela Graham said in a statement.
The school was put into a hold-and-secure protocol as RCMP searched for suspects. The protocol was lifted shortly after 5 p.m.
RCMP said officers arrested two 14-year-olds at a home in the city less than an hour after the stabbing.
Police said the victim knows one of the boys. They have been charged with assault with a weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of weapon for dangerous purposes, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.
One of the teens was also charged with failing to comply with a release order.
Both remained in custody until a scheduled court appearance Friday.
“We recognize that the incident (Thursday) at PCI is concerning,” Graham said in the statement. “We want to stress that our schools are safe and we are dedicated to maintaining a secure learning environment for all students and staff.”
Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox said she was informed about the stabbing by RCMP and the school division.
“We don’t want to see things like this happen in our community, and we will deal with it the best that we can,” she said.
The Manitoba government announced Monday it would require every school in Manitoba to undergo safety reviews and would fund training sessions on topics such as controlled access points and emergency responses.
Knox said the quick response to Thursday’s incident shows Portage Collegiate Institute is already using safety protocols.
“I think parents need to know that their children’s safety is their first priority,” she said.
