Longtime Tory MLA Kelvin Goertzen, who was briefly Manitoba’s premier, won’t seek re-election, ending a two-decade run representing Steinbach in the legislature assembly.
The 56-year-old announced his decision in a lengthy Facebook post Tuesday night, saying he will remain in his seat until the next provincial election is called. He framed the move as giving the Progressive Conservatives time to prepare for a smooth transition.
“For over 22 years, I have been incredibly blessed to work with extraordinary people,” Goertzen said in the statement.

Tory MLA Kelvin Goertzen says he will remain in his seat until the next provincial election is called but won’t seek re-election.
“Political staff rarely get the accolades they deserve, but I was fortunate to be able to see so many make a difference in the legislature and in a multitude of roles beyond politics.”
First elected in 2003, Goertzen held several key cabinet portfolios when his party was in government from 2016 to 2023, including health, education, justice and deputy premier.
He also served briefly as Manitoba’s 23rd premier in 2021, stepping in after Brian Pallister’s resignation and serving just over two months before Heather Stefanson became Tory leader and premier.
Goertzen is the second Tory MLA to announce he will not seek re-election in recent weeks. Turtle Mountain MLA Doyle Piwniuk will be stepping away from politics.
Goertzen offered praise for PC Leader Obby Khan, calling him “a good friend” and expressing confidence in his “new vision and passion” for the party.
Goertzen added that he hopes to be present “when he takes the oath of office as premier of Manitoba.”
Khan expressed gratitude for Goertzen’s longtime career serving “the people of Steinbach and all of Manitoba” at 450 Broadway in a news release Wednesday morning.
“I revere Kelvin’s counsel. His insight and understanding of the political landscape are unparalleled,” the Opposition leader said.
Khan described his colleague as “a trusted mentor and dear friend.”
Manitoba’s next election is scheduled for Oct. 5, 2027, but Premier Wab Kinew has suggested he might call it sooner.
