Two men and a woman are facing charges after a girl was assaulted by multiple people, including one who sexually assaulted her, police say.
Police were contacted about an injured youth lying on the side of a road in the Big Eddy settlement area of Opaskwayak Cree Nation at about 6:15 p.m. on Dec. 10.
She was taken to hospital with minor injuries. An investigation by the Manitoba First Nations Police Service determined she had been assaulted at a nearby home. After obtaining a search warrant, officers arrested 10 adults over several hours before releasing eight of them, police said in a news release Friday.
A 28-year-old man who was wanted on an arrest warrant for assault has been charged with another count of assault. A 26-year-old woman is facing an assault charge and was released on an undertaking.
A 19-year-old man arrested at a different home later that evening has been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and four counts of failing to comply with a release order.
All three people are from Opaskwayak. The two men were remanded into custody. Police said they are not releasing their names in order to protect the identity of the victim.
Days earlier, on Dec. 7, the MFNPS arrested a man after an unrelated incident in which a victim was assaulted by multiple people in Big Eddy. One of the attackers pointed a gun at the male during the incident, and the victim said he heard a gunshot while fleeing. He was not hurt, police said Friday.
An 18-year-old local man was arrested at a home Friday and charged with two gun offences. He was remanded into custody.
Police asked anyone who might have video from the 200 block of McGillvary Boulevard in Big Eddy early on Dec. 7 to review it. The MFNPS said anything suspicious should be reported to its Opaskwayak detachment at 204-623-8201 or the tips line anonymously at 1-833-978-0048.
