Fisher River Cree Nation lifted its lockdown Tuesday afternoon following a drive-by shooting at the community’s police detachment earlier in the day.
Several individuals on an all-terrain vehicle fired several shots at the Manitoba First Nations Police Service building and a parked cruiser early Tuesday, police said in a news release.
In a release, police said two of its officers were on duty in the detachment at the time, but no one was hurt.
“This incident appears to have been specifically directed at the police detachment and does not indicate a broader threat to the Fisher River community or its residents,” the statement said.
The community’s administrative offices, along with Charles Sinclair School and Fisher River High School were closed Tuesday as a precaution.
An employee at the band office said things had returned to normal on Tuesday afternoon. An officer with the MFNP said a couple of businesses decided to remain closed for the remainder of the day.
“The community is asked to remain vigilant but there is no need for general fear or alarm,” the MFNP statement said. “If you have any information about this incident — including sightings, vehicles, individuals, or other details that may assist investigators — please contact us immediately.”
Fisher River leadership will investigate the incident, alongside the First Nations police service, it said in a statement.
“We will not tolerate any attempts to intimidate or threaten our community, especially from drug dealers or any individuals trying to undermine the safety and well-being of our people,” the statement said.
Chief and council remains “steadfast in our ongoing battle against drugs and criminal activity in our community,” the statement said.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the police detachment’s admin line at 204-204-481-8022 or their tip line at 1-833-978-0048.
