The city has appointed an interim integrity commissioner following Sherri Walsh’s move to provincial affairs.

Lawyer Kathleen Coutts will fill the position on an interim basis starting May 1, and recruitment for the appointment of the next commissioner will begin following the upcoming fall general election.

Her appointment will continue until March 31 of next year.

City council’s governance committee voted in favour of appointing Coutts Wednesday. The vote will move to council for final approval.

Coutts previously served as an independent investigator and external counsel to the Manitoba Human Rights Commission.

Walsh was city council’s first integrity commissioner when she was appointed in 2017. Her role included advising council and investigating conflict-of-interest allegations.

In March, the province announced it had appointed her as its ethics commissioner, on a five-year contract.

She will also serve the legislature as information and privacy adjudicator, and lobbyist registrar.

Walsh will be resigning with the city April 30 and beginning her role with the province the next day.
