Winnipeg police officers raced from one crime scene to another as they responded to stabbings, assaults and robberies that put at least eight people in the ER over the Victoria Day weekend.

“And the investigations aren’t done,” said Winnipeg Police Service spokeswoman Const. Dani McKinnon on Tuesday.

She said the spate of serious calls, which took place across the city, taxed police resources; cadets, patrol and forensic identification officers were tied up at the scenes and major crimes detectives have got a stack of cases to solve.

McKinnon said it was too early to say whether any of the violence was random.

On Saturday around 1 a.m., officers were called to the 400 block of Langside Street, near Ellice Avenue, where they found a man in his 20s who had been seriously injured in an assault with an unspecified weapon. Officers gave the man first aid before paramedics arrived to take him to hospital in unstable condition.

Nine hours later, tactical and other officers were called to a home on the 200 block of Gordon Avenue in Elmwood, where a man in his 40s had been shot. He was taken to hospital in unstable condition.

Then at about 11 p.m., police found two men suffering from serious injuries after they were violently robbed around Sinclair Street and Dufferin Avenue. Both were taken to hospital.

Sunday at about 5:15 a.m., a man was stabbed on the 300 block of Boyd Avenue and was rushed to hospital in unstable condition. On Sunday night, a man was robbed and assaulted on Stanley Street near Siloam Mission, possibly at gunpoint, at about 11:30 p.m. He was rushed to hospital.

On Monday, a man in his 30s was stabbed on the 600 block of Main Street just before 9:30 p.m. A short time later, police became aware of a social media post that showed a woman being seriously assaulted by two people on the 200 block of Salter Street. The suspects got away in a stolen vehicle. Investigators have not yet identified the victim.

Early Tuesday, a 17-year-old boy was seriously injured during a “physical altercation” at a party at a home on the 300 block of Bowman Street in Elmwood.

Justin Douglas Enns, 40, has been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon and three breaches of a conditional sentence order.

Detectives are searching for suspects in the other incidents and ask anyone with information, including video surveillance, to call their office at 204-986-6219. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 204-786-8477.
