Rainbow Resource Centre’s Place of Pride, a residential building exclusively for older queer and transgender people, has received a $1-million gift toward its development.

The Carolyn Sifton Foundation donated the money to the project, saying the support “goes to the heart of who we are.”

“We are deeply honoured to stand with Rainbow Resource Centre as they create a space where 2SLGBTQ+ people can feel safe, seen, and supported,” Graeme Sifton, president of the foundation, said in a news release Tuesday.

The foundation donates funds toward projects in education, social services, and art and culture.

Patrick O’Reilly, Place of Pride’s capital campaign chair, called the cash injection a “vote of confidence” in the project.

Ground broke on the project in late 2022, marking the first phase of a $20-million, first-in-Canada facility. The 21-unit, rent-geared-to-income complex at 545 Broadway was built alongside Rainbow Resource Centre’s main building.

The complex was nearly leased out by December 2024.

In late 2024, Canada Life announced a $750,000 donation to Rainbow Resource Centre’s second phase of the project. A 12,000-square-foot community, programming and peer-support hub is being planned on the same property as the residential complex. Construction has yet to begin.

The cost to build the hub is $12 million, the complex’s website says.
