Campers, canoes or loons: vote on provincial park licence plate

Manitobans are invited to vote on the design for a new licence plate promoting Manitoba’s provincial parks.

The new licence plates featuring the chosen design will be made available next year.

The provincial park-themed plate was promised in the Nov. 18 throne speech.

“Manitobans love our parks, and so we want to hear from you on the best design to represent that pride in our parks as a new provincial licence plate,” Premier Wab Kinew said in a news release Monday.

An online survey open until July 31 gives Manitobans five options to choose from — campers pointing toward a starry sky, a canoe on a lake with geese flying in V-formation overhead, a brown plate with a trail map, a teal loon on a blue and orange lake, and a pure black plate with the caption “park at night.”

A portion of the proceeds from every licence plate sold will go to the Manitoba Provincial Park Endowment Fund through the Winnipeg Foundation to support park improvements.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada brought forward the application for the licence plates as a way for people to show their love for the nature of Manitoba, the news release said.

Since 2011, the specialty plate program run by Manitoba Public Insurance on behalf of the province has sold more than 208,000 of the 19 available specialty plates and generated more than $6.2 million in charitable proceeds, the province said.

Specialty plates cost $70.

Other speciality plates include: Basketball Manitoba, Brandon Wheat Kings, Curl Manitoba, Fish Futures, Madox’s Warriors (childhood cancer), MMIWS2S, Ride for Dad (prostate cancer), Snoman, Support our Troops, University of Winnipeg, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Goldeyes, Winnipeg Humane Society, Winnipeg Jets, Winnipeg Jets heritage, veterans, firefighters, paramedics and amateur radio operators.
