The province has called a byelection for The Pas-Kameesak July 21.
The government said in a news release Tuesday evening that the documents paving the way for the vote had been signed and issued.
The northern seat became available following the death of New Democrat MLA Amanda Lathlin in March.
In the Manitoba legislature, there are 57 seats, 33 of which are held by the New Democrats. The Progressive Conservatives have 20 seats. There is one independent Liberal, two independent members and one vacant seat.
The Manitoba NDP announced earlier it had nominated Jennifer Flett as its candidate for The Pas-Kameesak, which is an NDP stronghold.
Flett, a former vice-chief and councillor for Opaskwayak Cree Nation, was nominated Monday night.
“I’m honoured to be chosen as your candidate in The Pas-Kameesak,” Flett said in an NDP news release. “I started working for my community many years ago because I understand how important it is to ensure Northern families continue to have a voice at the table. I look forward to the opportunity to bring your voices to the legislature.”
Flett has worked as a technician with the Treaty Five Administration Office and with the Correctional Service of Canada.
She beat out fellow candidates Elyse Lathlin, Amanda’s daughter, and Lori Lathlin, Amanda’s aunt, for the nomination.
