It’s hard to miss the bright yellow balloons on the lawns of many Winnipeg homes this weekend.
Over in St. Vital, those balloons marked the spot of nine-year-old Myla and seven-year-old Elsie’s first-ever lemonade stand, where the sisters are spending a sunny Saturday morning serving cups of lemonade to neighbours and raising money for CancerCare Manitoba.
Their stand is one of more than 300 taking place across the province this summer as part of Lemonade Stands for Hope, a CancerCare Manitoba Foundation campaign supporting local cancer research and patient care.

“It’s summertime, and we thought, why not take advantage of the hot weather and do something good for CancerCare?” said their mom, Monica de Leon.
“Last year it popped up, but we just didn’t get around to doing it. Then my friend at work did it with her boys for the second year, and she just raved about it. We thought we’d follow suit and grabbed one of the free donation kits.”
The campaign, which launched in 2019 before pausing during the COVID-19 pandemic and returning in 2023, has grown significantly in recent years.
“It’s just such a nice grassroots fundraising initiative,” said Laura Curtis, director of marketing and communications at the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation. “There are so many different people from communities across Manitoba taking part, and most of them have been impacted by cancer.”
“When we meet people picking up their kits from our office, the reason they’re holding a stand is often because they’ve personally been affected by cancer or someone they love has.”
Participants who register can pick up a free fundraising kit from the foundation, including a banner, lawn sign and lemonade crystals. World of Water also donates ice and water to help stock the stands.
Money raised supports research at CancerCare Manitoba, including clinical trials, new treatments, and emotional and physical support programs for patients and their families.
“These are things that simply wouldn’t be possible without the support of donors,” Curtis said.
The campaign isn’t limited to front yards.

At WinRose Animal Hospital on St. Anne’s Road, staff were serving lemonade alongside cookies, popsicles and squares in exchange for donations Saturday.
“We saw them last year for the first time at a couple of other businesses, and I thought, what an interesting thing to do,” said practice manager Shannon Campbell. “It was something that we could all get on board with, and everybody wanted to participate.”
“As a locally owned clinic, we wanted to support something that’s local and give back to the community.”
Lemonade stands are taking place throughout the weekend and continue across Manitoba for the rest of the summer. Residents can find a participating stand using the campaign’s online map.
