BRANDON — A 22-year-old man is facing several charges, including impaired driving, after he was arrested last week for going 100 kilometres per hour near a park.

On July 16 around 4:30 p.m., Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP officers saw a truck that appeared to be travelling 100 km/h in a 40 km/h zone near a park in Ebb and Flow First Nation.

The truck was seen near the intersection of Lake Road Northeast and Northwest Road, RCMP said Tuesday.

Police realized the truck matched a description of a vehicle that had fled from officers multiple times earlier in the week, the release said.

RCMP tried to initiate a traffic stop, but the truck sped off and turned into a swampy field, police said.

The truck briefly stopped to allow a passenger to get out and then resumed driving around the field before turning back onto the road.

In doing so, the driver nearly got into a head-on collision with a police vehicle, RCMP said.

Police deployed a spike belt and the truck eventually stopped. The driver was arrested.

Stewart Racette Jr. from Ebb and Flow has been charged with impaired driving over 0.08 per cent, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operating a vehicle while impaired, possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000 and flight from a peace officer, RCMP said.

Racette Jr. has also been charged with failing to comply with the conditions of his probation order as a result of a previous incident, police said. He was remanded into custody.

The passenger in the truck, also 22, turned himself into RCMP on Friday, the release said.

He faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possessing property obtained by crime over $5,000, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and flight from a peace officer, RCMP said.

He was released on an undertaking.
