A man walks into Siloam Mission with no health card and no fixed address, not knowing where to turn for the healthcare he needs. Within minutes, he is receiving care from a volunteer health care professional who treats him with dignity and respect.
For someone experiencing homelessness, barriers like not having an ID can make essential health care out of reach.
But at Siloam Mission’s Saul Sair Health Centre (SSHC), people don’t have to have everything in place before they can receive care.
For nearly 20 years, the health centre has been a place thousands of people have turned to for care. It began with one gift and a belief that everyone deserves compassionate care.
The gift came from the estate of Saul Sair, a Winnipeg pharmacist who spent more than 50 years serving his community. After his death in 2003, his estate reached out to Siloam with a simple hope: that his generosity could help people experiencing homelessness and poverty.
His $1-million gift made it possible for Siloam Mission to open the Saul Sair Health Centre in August 2007 at 300 Princess Street.
That gift was the beginning.
What has sustained the health centre over the years is the generosity of people who continue to give their time, knowledge and care.
Today, the Saul Sair Health Centre is supported by volunteer doctors, nurses, dentists and other health care professionals, along with students from the University of Manitoba and Université de Saint-Boniface.
Together, they provide primary care, dental and vision services, foot care, physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy and other health supports. The health centre is open every day, with evening hours twice a week.
In 2025 – 26, the Saul Sair Health Centre recorded 22,226 visits and cared for 2,184 patients. But those numbers only tell part of the story.
For many people who come to Siloam, the health centre is a place where they can access care, find support and connect with other health resources without having to navigate the health-care system alone.
Sara Delorme, who works at the health centre, recalls one man who hadn’t had teeth in more than 10 years. Through donor-funded dental care, he received dentures.
“He came out smiling and said, ‘Look, I’ve got teeth,’” Sara says. “Then he told me he was going to go eat an apple.”
The Saul Sair Health Centre continues to adapt as community needs change. In July 2025, it introduced an opioid agonist therapy (OAT) clinic, offering medication and treatment for people seeking sobriety and stability. Since opening, the clinic has recorded 5,133 visits.
For Dr. Ralf Macek, volunteering at the health centre has been deeply meaningful.
“Volunteering at Siloam is about being part of a community that truly cares for one another. It’s incredibly fulfilling to give your time and know that the care you provide can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.”
As the Saul Sair Health Centre enters its 20th year, the gift that started it continues to live on through the people who make care possible – the staff, volunteers, students, donors and community partners who give their time, knowledge and compassion.
Almost 20 years later, Saul Sair’s name is still connected to a place where people can come through the door, be welcomed and receive the care they need.
