BRANDON — The final suspect of four men involved in a crime spree that ended with an RCMP officer being shot near Onanole last August has pleaded guilty.
Shane Beaulieu pleaded guilty in Brandon provincial court on Monday to two counts of break and enter, possession of a motor vehicle obtained by crime, and two firearm-related charges.
Beaulieu was part of a series of incidents put into motion on Aug. 29, 2018, when he and three co-accused broke into two properties near Onanole, stealing numerous items including firearms and ammunition.
After loading up the truck with stolen items, the group headed down the road where they were met by RCMP — Cpl. Graeme Kingdon in one cruiser and Const. Mitch Thompson in another — responding to the report of a break and enter in progress.
Kingdon forced the truck off the road and into a ditch where it became stuck. Three of the accused, including Beaulieu, jumped out of the vehicle and fled with Thompson in pursuit.
When Kingdon approached the vehicle to clear it for officer safety, Beaulieu’s co-accused Therae Racette-Beaulieu shot him from a nearby hill with a stolen 12-gauge shotgun, hitting him in the back of the head.
Upon hearing the shot, Thompson returned to the police cruisers to find Kingdon wounded.
As Thompson tried to secure his injured partner, Racette-Beaulieu repositioned himself and fired another two rounds at the officers hitting the front of the truck and narrowly missing them.
Beaulieu was later arrested after he was found by police walking down a road in the area.
He has been out on bail since October 2018.
Beaulieu has been scheduled for sentencing in Minnedosa provincial court in May.
Racette-Beaulieu pleaded guilty in February to one count of attempted murder — amended from two counts of attempted murder to include both RCMP officers who were shot at — as well as breaking, entering and stealing firearms and robbery of a motor vehicle.
In April he was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison, and is currently before the court once again after allegedly stabbing a fellow inmate at Brandon Correctional Centre less than a month after his sentencing.
Tommy Edward Beaulieu pleaded guilty in August to robbery with violence, two counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer and break, enter and theft of a firearm.
He is scheduled for sentencing in Minnedosa provincial court in February.
Delaney Houle also pleaded guilty in September to possession of a weapon obtained by crime, unauthorized possession of a firearm in a vehicle and two counts of break and enter.
He is scheduled for sentencing in Minnedosa provincial court in March.
