Gord Steeves is alive and well and insisting he’s not dismayed by a Probe Research poll placing him third in the race to become Winnipeg’s mayor.

On Friday, the lawyer and former St. Vital councillor declined to comment on a Free Press/CTV-commissioned poll that suggested he enjoys the support of 16 per cent of decided voters, behind former NDP MP and MLA Judy Wasylycia-Leis at 41 per cent and lawyer Brian Bowman at 23 per cent.

Steeves acknowledged on Saturday that he’s still chasing Wasylycia-Leis but does not believ‎e he’s trailing Bowman.

Given the margin of error in the Probe poll – four per cent – Bowman and Steeves remain in a statistical tie for second.

Standing alongside Kenaston Boulevard, where he was preparing to wave to passing motori‎sts, Steeves repeated his assertion that he is the only conservative alternative to Wasylycia-Leis. He also repeated his characterization of Bowman as a “far left” candidate who will spend billions on rapid-transit corridors and attempt to bring in a municipal sales tax.

“What is right-of-centre about Brian Bowman?” Steeves asked. “What is conservative about his policy?”‎

Steeves said he believes he has a lot of room to grow during the final 18 days of the election campaign.

He also said a press conference planned ‎and then cancelled for Friday at city hall will be rescheduled for Monday.

‎Bowman has called a press conference for Sunday about the “choice Winnipeggers will have on Oct. 22”.
