Hey there, time traveller!

The fortunes of CKX-Television in Brandon may have changed after word that national cable television and communications provider Shaw Communications Inc. will purchase the station and save it from fading to black.
CTV Television Inc. confirmed it has accepted an offer from Shaw Communications Inc. to purchase CKX-TV in Brandon and its ‘A’ stations in Wingham (CKNX-TV) and Windsor (CHWI-TV Wheatley) in an email statement issued by the broadcaster Thursday afternoon.
“We’ve accepted their offer of $1 per station,” said Ivan Fecan, president and CEO of CTVglobemedia and CEO of CTV.
“Cable is rolling in money and can obviously afford to underwrite the losses. Good for them. I’m sure they will live up to the existing conditions of licence placed on these stations, which is wonderful news for the employees and for the people of Windsor, Wingham and Brandon.
“I think it’s great,” Fecan concluded.
Phone calls placed to Jim Shaw, CEO and vice-chairman of Shaw Communications Inc., were not returned by last night’s press deadline.
When contacted about the statement issued by CTV, CKX-TV station manager Alan Cruise declined comment.
The television station’s 40 employees have been in limbo since CTV announced in mid-February that it would not be renewing CKX’s broadcast licence with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and put the station on the market for $1, exclusive of real estate. Any deal would still be subject to CRTC approval.
CKX-TV first took to the local airwaves on Jan. 28, 1955, launched by Brandon-based Craig Media.
It remained locally owned by the Craigs for nearly half a century before was sold to CHUM-TV in 2004, which was subsequently purchased by CTVglobemedia Inc. in 2007.
