WINNIPEG – Workers at Tolko Industries at The Pas have ratified a three-year agreement with the company, retroactive to Feb. 1.

However, the sawmill that employs most of the workers covered by the new deal remains shut down because of a downturn in the North American lumber industry.

Members of Local 1-324 of the United Steelworkers union ratified the deal in voting over the past two days.

As part of the agreement, employees will gain back 10 per cent in wages that were rolled back in 2006. As well they will receive an immediate two per cent wage increase, followed by another two per cent increase in September 2010.

The sawmill has been shut down since January of this year, when more than 70 workers were laid off.

More than 40 other employees covered by the new contract are still employed. They handle the unloading of logging trucks and operate wood chippers that are used to supply the kraft paper mill in the community.

The paper mill has continued to operate.
