CALGARY — Husky Energy Inc. on Friday said it has appointed Asim Ghosh, a former telecom boss, as its new CEO.
Ghosh will replace the outgoing John Lau as of June 1, the company said in a statement.
Ghosh is the former managing director and CEO of India-based Vodafone Essar Ltd., which was previously controlled Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka Shing’s Hutchison Whampoa conglomerate.
Under his tenure, the cellular phone company grew from a virtual startup in 1998 to become one of the largest mobile companies in the world by subscribers. He was appointed to Husky’s board of directors in May of 2009 and presently heads the company’s health, safety and environment committee.
“Mr. Ghosh has demonstrated his vast executive experience and sound business judgment on Husky’s board of directors. We are confident in the future of this company under his leadership,” said Husky co-chairmen Victor Li and Canning Fok in a joint statement. “The board believes Mr. Ghosh’s global perspective and proven ability to take companies to the next level will advance Husky’s mandate of strategic growth and creation of shareholder value.”
Michael Dunn, an analyst with FirstEnergy Capital in Calgary, said it’s unclear what impact the new CEO will have on the company.
Ghosh remains an unknown quantity other than the fact that he transformed Vodafone Essar and began his corporate career in Canada with Procter & Gamble and Rothmans International.
