That sleek royal blue bus seen working Winnipeg Transit’s North Main-Corydon: 18 route could be the future of urban bus design for North America.

The new-look bus — called Xcelsior — is New Flyer Industries’ latest design and is slated to become the Winnipeg bus maker’s standard production model in the near future.

It includes innovative features to improve the passenger and driver experience and is made with lightweight materials and the latest emission control engine design to improve fuel efficiency and run quieter than conventional buses.

Xcelsior will be the first North American bus with LED headlights and a modern instrumentation panel that replaces gauges whose design has not changed in about 50 years.

After more than three years of research and development work the model is now in production with 25 hybrid-electric models now being built for Brampton, Ont.’s new bus rapid transit system.
