Pilots far from strike vote
MONTREAL — Air Canada pilots are far from a strike vote even if they spurn the airline’s hardball stance against renegotiating a collective agreement, the union’s president said Monday.
“We’re a long way away from the end of the road,” Capt. Paul Strachan said in an interview.
The Air Canada Pilots Association announced Monday a 10-day ratification vote of the collective agreement will begin May 9. If members vote down the tentative deal, it will force the airline back to the bargaining table, Strachan said.
Pilots have been without a contract since March 31.
RIM debuts smartphone
ORLANDO, Florida — Research In Motion Ltd. kicked off its annual conference here with the launch of a new touch-screen BlackBerry Bold smartphone and a revamped version of its smartphone operating system as the company attempts to reassert itself as a major player in the mobile- communications industry.
On Monday, RIM announced it would launch a pair of BlackBerry Bold smartphones later this summer with carriers around the world. However, the company did not offer a specific release date or pricing details.
The two Bold devices — the 9900 and 9930 — both run on the company’s new BlackBerry 7 operating system and feature a touch-screen interface in addition to the traditional BlackBerry QWERTY keypad. The 9900 is designed to run on HSPA+ GSM networks; the 9930 will be compatible with CDMA carrier networks.
Agrium buys fertilizer firm
CALGARY — Agrium Inc. (TSX:AGU) announced Monday the purchase of Italian fertilizer distribution company CerealToscana S.A. and its Romanian subsidiary, Agroport, for $27 million plus working capital.
The combined companies have a stable financial record, with gross sales of approximately $200 million, Agrium said in a release.
CerealToscana and Agroport have 90,000 tonnes of storage, with distribution assets in Livorno and Ravenna, Italy, and along the Danube in Romania. They sell an estimated 400,000 tonnes of fertilizer a year, including commodity and specialty products.
