PEOPLE

Deborah Young

has been hired as executive lead for aboriginal achievement at the University of Manitoba. Young is a member of Opaskwayak Cree Nation in Manitoba, and a graduate of the University of Manitoba with bachelor and master’s degrees in social work. She spent six years as a policy adviser at the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs. She was at the Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat, Privy Council Office, where she worked on the First Nation education component of the Kelowna Accord.

Louis St-Cyr

has accepted the new position of chief development officer at St-Boniface Hospital Foundation, effective Sept. 1. St-Cyr comes from Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface where he headed up its development office and recently completed the $15-million VISION capital campaign.

 

James Ladd

of Life & Business Coaching has become an associate of Next Steps Canada, a Toronto-based company offering outplacement and career transition services.

 

Joel Waterman

has been appointed assistant general manager of Hilton Suites Winnipeg Airport. Waterman is certified as a travel agent, Waterman began in the hotel industry as a night auditor at the then Radisson Suites Hotel in 2000.

 

Dr. Paul Komenda

has been appointed research director at Seven Oaks General Hospital and Wellness Institute. Komenda has been at Seven Oaks for two years, treating patients in outpatient kidney health clinics, providing inpatient consultation for nephrology and care in the hemodialysis unit. He has also served as medical director overseeing the expansion of home hemo-dialysis.

 

Steve Kroft

was recently appointed president of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba. He has been a JFM board member since 2001 and joined the executive in 2003. He is president & CEO of the Conviron Group of Companies.

 

Jonathan Kroft

a past partner of Aikins, is returning to the firm. In 2006 Kroft moved from Aikins to Wellington West to fulfil the role of executive vice-president, risk management and chief legal officer. He oversaw a team that provided firm-wide advice on legal issues, legal risk management, dispute management and regulatory compliance. He returned to Aikins on July 15.

 

Dr. Phillip F. Gardiner

Canada research chair in physical activity and health studies, is the newly appointed interim scientific director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)’s Institute of musculoskeletal health and arthritis. Prior to this appointment, he was chair of the IMHA advisory board. Gardiner is professor of physiology in the faculty of medicine at the University of Manitoba.

Stu Clark Centre for Entrepreneurship

at the University of Manitoba has awarded several Winnipeg start-up companies with top awards from the Manitoba Venture Challenge. Three of the four recipients will travel to the Banff Venture Forum in October. The winners: HD Petroleum – Recycles waste motor oils and through a refining process, produces a high quality diesel fuel. Ticketorium – Based in Kleefeld, it offers software to tour operators, event producers and venues that provides the ability to manage ticketing, including online sales, billing and reporting. Hi-5 Fish Cuisine – A start-up founded by immigrants from China, offering healthy fish meals using Manitoba fresh fish, organic potatoes, tomatoes and other vegetables using a parchment paper bag for cooking and serving. Tradeslive – Offers a social media marketing package incorporating information on new products and projects utilizing a suite of marketing tools not previously found online on one website.

 

General Aggregate Equipment Sales

has promoted Derek Deprez and Kevin Atamanchuk while adding Rob Olfrey and Dan Gault to its staff. Deprez has been promoted to sales representative from product support representative; he has been with the company since 2010. Atamanchuk moves to product support representative, after working as a parts counterperson. Olfrey has joins the company as an aggregate service technician. He previously worked at Mid Canada Belting. Gault has been hired as a parts counterperson after working in parts sales at Partsource.
