CANADA Safeway has built its first-ever LEED-certifiable store at River East Plaza.

The $20-million, 49,000-square-foot store opened Thursday afternoon following the closing the previous night of the old Safeway store on the property.

The company has been seeking to redevelop that particular location for about 15 years. Construction of the eastern extension of the Chief Peguis Trail to Lagimodiere Boulevard was one of the things that prompted the new store.

It took some time to complete because of a lengthy process to assemble ownership of the entire property.

In addition to being able to bring a brand-new store onto the market, it also becomes a new store model Safeway is likely to copy with future developments.

John Graham, Safeway’s director of public affairs, said, “We are proud that it will be the first LEED- (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified store in the country. It will be a template for new stores going forward.”

Graham said this location was chosen as the grocery chain’s first LEED-certifiable location mostly because it fit in with the timing of the company’s commitment to begin incorporating greener building practices in all of its developments.

Among other things, the new store includes:

— 20 per cent recycled content;

— 24 per cent lower energy consumption;

— 70 per cent of the waste produced will be recycled; and

— 85 per cent of the demolition of the old store will be recycled.

The store uses LED lights in its refrigeration cases and sensors throughout to reduce the costs of cooling and heating over the year.

It features Safeway’s latest version of its Lifestyle store with an in-house Starbucks, an expanded organic produce section and a deli with hot and cool restaurant-quality items. A private pharmacy consultation area also makes it easier for customers to talk confidentially with a pharmacy professional.

Graham said there are added costs to LEED-certifiable buildings.

“But we believe the energy savings and the ability to do better by the world we live in are certainly important when we look at the overall costs,” he said.
