It was 30 C last weekend but retailers at Polo Park Shopping Centre think it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

About 25 stores in the city’s biggest mall took part in a job fair Thursday, hoping to add an average of 10 people each, according to Deborah Green, manager of Polo Park.

Those retailers include Coach, the specialized handbag retailer which will open its doors on Sept. 30, jeweler Michael Hill, which will open in November, mall mainstay, the Gap, and anchor tenant, the Bay.

RUTH BONNEVILLE / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Michelle Steininger, general manager of the Gap at Polo Park, is looking for people to work the sales floor and stockroom.

They all staked out space in the mall’s centre court on the main floor, with several setting out displays to remove any doubt about what kind of merchandise they sell. The Gap, for example, put out a number of adult and child mannequins wearing their latest fashions.

Michelle Steininger, the store’s general manger, jumped at the chance to nab the table right in front of her store so she had the ideal backdrop for the entire job fair.

“It looks good. It’s the Gap, we have to look good,” she said with a laugh.

She said she’s looking for people to work the sales floor and in the stockroom in the run-up to Christmas — which, let’s face it, starts well before Halloween — and beyond.

She said it’s not uncommon for people to come in who don’t shop at the Gap to want to work there.

“Not everybody is our target market. Some people will say, ‘I want to work on the kids and baby side of the store because it’s so cute,'” she said.

Cindy Mick, store manager at Coach, one of the most highly anticipated arrivals at Polo Park in recent times, said the excitement in the community is spilling over to the applications she received.

“The excitement and buzz is definitely in the city about Coach coming. The excitement about the Jets coming back is first, though,” she said with a laugh.

Mick said she has already hired her management group and some of her sales team. She hopes to add another 10 to the mix through the job fair, bringing the store’s total to about 35 people.

In total, Polo Park retailers have about 5,000 employees.

“It’s like a little city,” Green said.
