Sales of new motor vehicles continue to barrel along at a record-setting pace in Manitoba.
Seasonally unadjusted figures released today by Statistics Canada show sales of new cars, trucks, vans and SUVs were running 10.4 per cent ahead of last year’s pace after the first seven months of the year — 33,642 units versus 30,468 during the same period in 2012.
And 2012 was the best year on record for Manitoba’s new-vehicle dealerships, with sales topping the 50,000-unit mark for the first time and finishing the year at 52,236.
This year’s total included 4,943 new vehicles purchased in July. Although that was down 15.8 per cent from June’s tally of 5,868, it was a 4.6 per cent improvement from a year earlier, when 4,724 units were sold.
It was a similar story at the national level, with sales down from June to July — 161,697 versus 174,439 — but up from a year earlier when 151,451 new vehicles were sold.
Canada’s sales for the first seven months were up 2.5 per cent to 1,063,983 units from 1,038,344 in the same period in 2012.
