Keith Bellamy has joined the Winnipeg Folk Festival in the position of development manager. He will be responsible for overseeing the fundraising and sponsorship initiatives of the festival. He brings to this position a bachelor of music (Brandon University) and a master’s certificate in project management (University of Winnipeg). He most recently worked at the University of Winnipeg as manager for conferences and events services. Bellamy is an active supporter of the Manitoba arts and cultural community and brings a background in event management, fundraising and corporate sponsorship.

Laura Mikuska, principal of Mikuska Group, has been appointed a director on the Association of Fundraising Professionals Canadian council for 2014. The council represents more than 3,500 fundraising professionals in Canada as part of AFP International. Mikuska is a consultant to non-profit and charitable organizations in the areas of fund development, governance and communications.

Michael Bayer, MBA, president of the LEAN Consulting Group Ltd., has received the Lean Black Belt for Healthcare certification from the Institute of Industrial Engineers. This certification indicates he is a master practitioner for implementing Lean across health-care organizations and it augments his more than 15 years’ experience in implementing process improvement and change management in hospitals and long-term care organizations in Canada and the United States.

Garth Smorang, QC, of Myers Weinberg LLP, has been elected a fellow of the College of Labour and Employment Lawyers. The college was established in 1995 by members of the American Bar Association’s labour and employment law section to recognize those who have distinguished themselves as leaders in the field by long and outstanding service. Smorang’s practice is exclusively in union and employee-side labour and employment law. He was inducted into the college at a formal dinner in New Orleans Nov. 9.

Fillmore Riley is pleased to welcome Dianna Nesbit to its family law department. Nesbit will work on a range of matters in the family law field, including separation and divorce, custody and access, child and spousal support, prenuptial agreements, cohabitation and common-law relationship agreements, guardianship, and adoption. Nesbit graduated with a juris doctor from Robson Hall at the University of Manitoba in 2012. She also completed a bachelor of arts degree at the university in 2006.

BDO Canada LLP is pleased to congratulate Douglas Einarson, CA, who was recently awarded the fellow chartered accountant (FCA) designation at the ICAM membership recognition dinner Nov. 7. The FCA designation is bestowed on a CA in recognition of the service they have provided and the honour they have brought to the profession. Einarson is a partner in BDO’s Winnipeg office and has more than 27 years’ experience. He specializes in working with businesses and organizations primarily in the financial services, non-profit and health-care sectors. He serves on the boards of numerous organizations, including the Manitoba Chartered Accountants Foundation.

BDO Canada LLP congratulates Susan Thompson, CGA, on being awarded the Pinnacle Award by CGA Manitoba. The Pinnacle Award is given to CGA members who have demonstrated outstanding career achievement. Thompson is a partner in BDO’s Winnipeg office and has more than 18 years’ experience providing services to growing organizations, primarily in the manufacturing and technology sectors. As an active member of CGA Manitoba, she has served on numerous committees and mentored many CGA students.

Dr. Michael Van Helden, P.Eng., a principal and founding partner of TREK Geotechnical Inc., was awarded the 2013 Early Achievement Award by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Manitoba (APEGM). This prestigious award recognizes outstanding engineers and geoscientists for exceptional achievements in the early years of their careers.

The National Unsung Hero Award is presented to a volunteer who has made an impact on the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada and its mission with their selflessness in ensuring it meets its goals. This year’s winner is Nancy Nagy of our Winnipeg chapter. Nagy has been involved with the CCFC for 25 years. She accepted her award Nov. 16 at the Victoria Inn at our education symposium.

WISH Inc. (Women in Second Stage Housing), a Winnipeg-based non-profit that provides women and their children affected by domestic violence with full-time counselling, support programs and on-site residence, has attained national accreditation by Imagine Canada. This affirms WISH Inc. meets the high standards for demonstrated compliance in five fundamental areas: board governance, financial accountability and transparency, fundraising, staff management and volunteer involvement. WISH Inc. is among the first two organizations in Manitoba to be accredited through the Imagine Canada’s standards program.
