There was no American-style pushing and shoving and only short lines this morning at the start of Black Friday sales in Winnipeg.

Only about 100 people were on hand for the 6 a.m. opening of Best Buy in the Polo Park area, though several emerged with big-screen TVs. At the Polo Park shopping centre, smart shoppers lined up first at the customer service desk for a $10 gift card and then at the Hudson’s Bay for a $20 card.

Far from Boxing Day mayhem, most stores are quite quiet, and pre-opening lines were short.

“I came to the Bay a few days ago and saw some items I really wanted,” said computer analyst Abraham Osho. That included some winter boots and G-Star jeans. He’s hoping his early arrival will ensure his size is still available.

“The Black Friday thing is just coming to Canada. It’s not yet a big thing like down in the States,” he said.

Other shoppers, clutching coffees, said they began at midnight at Walmart, where they snagged a $68 tablet. In the mall, Lululemon and Aritzia, two hip but pricey shops, topped people’s lists.
