An estimated 50 employees at Winnipeg’s Lucerne plant, which makes cheese and ice cream, are losing their jobs when the plant shuts down this summer.
Sobeys announced the plant will close Aug. 29 when the grocery giant consolidates operations with an existing plant in Edmonton.
The closure is among several across the country that are planned as Sobeys cuts costs and jobs after last fall’s Canada Safeway acquisition.
The spokesman for the union that represents Canada Safeway workers verified the closure Thursday, but said it does not include a separate milk production operation at the same location.
The plant is located at 1000 King Edward St. along Route 90.
“The milk side of the plant is modern… it’s staying. They’re closing the cheese operation and the one for ice cream,” said Blake Crothers, spokesman for UFCW local 832
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union represents workers at Sobeys and Safeway. It’s currently at the bargaining table for its Manitoba workers at both stores.
Union workers at the cheese and ice cream plant are represented by UNIFOR, Local 468. A spokesman could not be reached for comment last night.
