Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (LP) is spending $95 million to convert its strand-board plant in Swan Valley into a mill which will produce siding for the residential, industrial and light-commercial construction sectors.

The conversion, which will begin late this summer and take until the fourth quarter of the year to complete, will add about 40 new jobs to the facility’s existing 160-employee workforce.

LP Swan Valley, as it will be called, will be the company’s first SmartSide siding mill in Canada. Plans call for the mill to be capable of producing panel and lap siding. It will also produce OSB panels based on market conditions.

“Selecting Swan Valley is a testament to the people who work here,” said plant manager Kevin Betcher. “We have more than 19 years of experience in manufacturing OSB from a safety, quality, environmental and manufacturing perspective.”

LP Swan Valley will be LP’s fifth strand-siding mill, joining others in Hayward, Wis., Tomahawk, Wis., Two Harbors, Minn. and Newberry, Mich.

LP also operates fiber-siding mills in East River, N.S., which produces the LP CanExel® siding brand, and Roaring River, N.C.

Nashville-based LP is a leading manufacturer of engineered wood building materials, including OSB, structural framing products, and exterior siding for the construction industry.
