Lowe’s Canada is finally taking the plunge and diving into the Winnipeg market.

A Winnipeg Construction Association document shows the home-improvement giant plans to build a 106,000-square-foot store at 1799 Kenaston Blvd., which is at the south end of the retail power centre on the southeast corner of Kenaston and McGillivray Boulevard.

The document estimates the cost of constructing the building at between $15 million and $20 million. It says construction work is to get underway this year, with completion in 2016.

It notes zoning for the site has already been approved, and working drawings are underway.

“That means someone is literally being paid to design it,” WCA executive vice-president Ron Hambley said in an interview. “Nobody spends the money on working drawings unless it (the building) is going in the ground. That’s an expensive design piece.”

Hambley said the association doesn’t consider a project a go until working drawings are underway.

“So someone must have said ‘go’ to the drawings, which means they are literally two months away from going to tender and in the ground,” he added.

U.S.-based Lowe’s began expanding into Canada seven years ago, and has been rumoured for several years to be planning to open a store in southwest Winnipeg. The original talk was that it might be built in the IKEA-anchored Seasons of Tuxedo development on the corner of Kenaston and Sterling Lyon Parkway.
