The Vancouver-based Save-On-Foods grocery store chain plans to enter the Manitoba market with the opening of several new stores in Winnipeg.

A company spokesperson said today the firm will be announcing the details of its expansion plans for Manitoba and Saskatchewan at a news conference this Thursday in Winnipeg.

The news conference will be held at the Northgate Shopping Centre on McPhillips Street, where the company plans to open a store in the former Zellers space in the mall.

The company is also reportedly planning to open a store in the new Bridgwater Forest townsite in southwest Winnipeg, although the spokesperson would only say that the company plans to open more than two stores in the province.

“We’ve got lots of big news to talk about,” she added.

Save-On-Foods is a division of Vancouver-based Overwaitea Food Group (OFG), which is owned by the Jim Pattison Group.

Overwaitea operates 125 stores under the Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, Cooper’s Foods, Urban Fare, PriceSmart Foods and Bulkley Valley Wholesale banners. It is the country’s largest Western-based food store chain.
