Hey there, time traveller!

A family-owned Winnipeg box spring-and-mattress factory — Canwest Bedding Ltd. — has been purchased by the Canadian subsidiary of Serta Simmonds Bedding, LLC. (SSB) for an undisclosed sum.
Winnipeg’s Kay family had owned and operated Canwest since 1988. The company is the Serta licensee for Manitoba, Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario, and also produces some private-label box springs and mattresses for local retailers.
It was also the last independently owned Serta licensee in Canada. Acquiring the company gives SSB subsidiary SSH Bedding Canada Co. control of the manufacturing and distribution of all Serta and Simmonds products in Canada.
“We are excited to bring on board the Canwest operations and team,” SSB president Michael Traub said in a statement. “Not only have we expanded our ownership of the Serta brand in Canada, the acquisition demonstrates our commitment to advancing a key strategic goal for SSB, and that is to become a leading international operator.”
An SSB spokesman said, “The current plan is to keep the operation as is.” That includes retaining all 45 of Canwest’s employees.
Benjamin Kay, Canwest’s president and chief operating officer, also will remain with the company in a consulting role “for the near future” to help ensure a smooth transition.
“We are pleased by this transaction because it ensures the continued vibrancy of the Serta brand across Canada, as well as a secured future for our dedicated Canwest employees,” Kay said in a statement.
Kay was unavailable Friday for further comment.
Atlanta-based SSB owns and manages two of the largest bedding brands in the mattress industry — National Bedding Company LLC, which is the largest licensee and majority shareholder of Serta, Inc., and Simmons Bedding Company, LLC.
The 45,000-square-foot Canwest factory, located at 60 Bunting St., is one of six manufacturing plants SSB operates in Canada. It also has 33 plants in the United States and one in Puerto Rico.
