‘Advocate for major tourism projects’

The former longtime general manager of the downtown Delta Winnipeg Hotel is this year’s winner of Tourism Winnipeg’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Helen Halliday was one of 11 winners honoured at the 2016 Winnipeg Tourism Awards of Distinction luncheon Monday.

The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to a person who has had an effect on the tourism industry and dedicated a significant part of his or her life to promoting Winnipeg and growing the tourism economy.

“Right from the start, Helen looked beyond her role as a hotelier and sought out ways to get involved in the greater community, whether it be through her work with various local charities or liaising with key stakeholders as an advocate for major tourism projects,” said Chantal Sturk-Nadeau, senior vice-president of Tourism Winnipeg.

“She recognized that success was not any one thing, but would be achieved by growing and promoting all that Winnipeg has to offer.”

Dayna Spiring, CEO of Economic Development Winnipeg, said Winnipeg has come a long way in terms of new development, attractions and innovation in the five years since the awards were introduced.

“The awards are a chance to thank people in the industry for raising the bar of excellence and to encourage them to keep the momentum going as we work together to grow our economy,” she said.
