Advisory services lead Terry Brown takes great strides in providing business solutions to his clients — with a moccasin on one foot and a dress shoe on the other.

At Legacy Bowes Group, advisory services stands as one of the main pillars of expertise offered to clients consisting of Negotiation Services, Organizational Reviews, Human Resource Services, Strategic Planning and Funding and Grants. And as one of the partners who keys in on Indigenous business services, Brown outlines how he and the team can help.

“Essentially, through our business advisory services at Legacy Bowes, we deal with money challenges and people challenges,” he says.

“My career to date has been about bringing different parties
together. I serve as a bridge between Indigenous leadership,
business and government in order to negotiate good deals”

“Whether it’s crises or opportunities, we help them to fix or solve their situation.”

With a team of the other seasoned Partners with ample experience in negotiation, strategic planning and operational efficiency, Brown helps companies with everything from human resource issues to grant and funding acquisition. Advice is offered to groups wanting to start a business from scratch as well as provide organizational reviews for long-established companies.

“We will share with you the good, the bad and the ugly. We do not pull punches. We are so committed to seeing our clients succeed in everything we do, so that means there are times when I have to ask the client’s permission to be honest because I’m a pretty blunt guy,” he says.

“I will gladly have a difficult discussion with a client because often I have to remind them of problems in order to make improvements.”

With family ties to both the Cree and Ojibwe nations, Brown takes pride in his Indigenous ancestry — and in his ability to create in-roads for non-Indigenous clients.

“My career to date has been about bringing different parties together. I serve as a bridge between Indigenous leadership, business and government in order to negotiate good deals,” he says.

“I often work on projects that involve multiple first nations or multiple mainstream groups and businesspeople. Imagine trying to convince three or four chiefs and councils at the same time as convincing a provincial or federal government at the same time as convincing a business entity. That requires a lot of bridging in between —and with a seasoned ex-CEO, Bill Medd, a distinguished HR Lead with Indigenous ties, Barbara Bowes, a known Executive Coach in Paul Croteau, and experienced Executive Leader, Lisa Cefali, as support, I have the ability to deal effectively with all sides.”

“It’s always our goal at Legacy Bowes to work ourselves out of the engagement, get a good referral and move on. But there’s plenty of help needed in the marketplace,so there’s never a shortage of assistance required. “Whether he’s helping to stabilize an organization or assisting with business alignment, Brown is always on hand to help.

“We deal with about 100 different entities at any point in time, with one-third being Indigenous, and confidentiality and sensitively to business competitiveness and effective negotiation at the forefront – always.” he says.

“There are many times when we work with organizations to get them to the next level on a Business Opportunity on a confidential basis. Often, if we’ve done our job,you won’t hear our name.”

As an additional educational opportunity, Brown and his team recently hosted the second annual Demystifying Indigenous Business conference, which addressed topics such as urban reserves, Indigenous etiquette, treaties and much more.

“It was targeted towards the business community, and five different first nations presented at the conference,”he says. “There seems to be a new willingness by both Indigenous leadership as well as mainstream leadership to move towards reconciliation, and I’m honored do the bridging for them.”
