Winnipeg Richardson International Airport has set another record for passenger volumes in a single month.
August was the busiest month ever for the airport, with 447,382 passengers passing through the terminal, an increase of 13 per cent increase from August 2016. It also marked the 16th consecutive month of passenger growth, the Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) said Thursday.
“The incredible growth we are seeing at the airport is proof that our city and province are on the right track,” said WAA president and CEO Barry Rempel. “Whether it was families travelling to our city to see loved ones, tourists here to take in our world-class attractions, or young athletes coming for the Canada Summer Games, August was an incredible month for the airport.”
The arrival of Canada’s best young athletes to participate in the Summer Games was one of the highlight events at the airport in August, the WAA said. Another was the re-uniting of a young Yazidi boy — Emad Mishko Tamo — with his mother.
It also noted that at the end of the month, the airport also saw the arrival of residents from Wasagamack, St. Theresa Point and Garden Hill, who were evacuated to Winnipeg because of the threat from forest fires in their communities.
