Spirit of Winnipeg celebrates eight

About 400 people attended the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce’s Spirit of Winnipeg Awards gala at the Club Regent Event Centre on Friday night and saw eight local organizations honoured for making a difference.

​The winners were culled from 24 total nominees selected because they embody the ambitious, innovative, caring spirit of the city and chosen by volunteer judges drawn from the business community.

The 2018 Spirit of Winnipeg Award recipients are:

• Funding Change — Rising Star (Start Up) Award — An ambitious tech startup that provides an online 50/50 raffle platform, dramatically expanding fundraising reach for charities and non-profits. Finalists were Every.Studio and TrapTap.

• Trainfo — Technology Award — Real-time tracking of train-crossing delays not only helps commuters get home safer, but speeds emergency personnel on their way. Finalists were 1Life Workplace Safety Solutions and Tangent Animation.

• Sycamore Energy — Environment and Energy Award — “An overnight success 10 years in the making” that’s expanding Manitoba’s renewables expertise while growing in international markets. Finalists were Little Brown Jug and University of Winnipeg.

• Mood Disorders Association of Manitoba — Wellness and Workplace Culture Award — Vital advocates for mental health who practise the same peer support culture they preach. Finalists were Bold and NorWest Co-Op Community Health.

• A Port in the Storm — Non-profit and Social Enterprise Award — Greatly subsidized housing for remote and rural guests receiving vital medical care in Winnipeg. Finalists were Jocelyn House Hospice and Main Street Project.

• Manitobah Mukluks — Trade Award — Champions of the “original winter boot” who have channelled their international success into support for the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs. Finalists were Peak of the Market and Winnipeg Airports Authority.

• HTFC Planning & Design — Design and Building Award — The team behind some of Winnipeg’s most iconic locations — the Oodena Celebration Circle, Manitoba Hydro Gardens, Leo Mol Sculpture Gardens and Millennium Library Park. Finalists were Sport Manitoba and Red River College.

• APTN — Spirit of Winnipeg Award — The first national Indigenous broadcaster in the world, empowering Indigenous peoples by sharing their languages and stories. This category recognizes an outstanding effort and commitment to making Winnipeg a better, more prosperous community through corporate leadership and social responsibility. (The recipient of this award was nominated and selected by the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce board of directors.)
