The Irish-style pub and eatery Fionn MacCool’s has shut down their Regent Avenue West location in Winnipeg for the foreseeable future.

It remains unclear when the chain restaurant – whose brand is owned by the parent company Recipe Unlimited Corporation – will open again. A sign hanging on the building this week announced – but did not explain – the closure.

“Recipe Unlimited Corporation wishes to advise guests and neighbours that this Fionn MacCool’s restaurant is now closed,” the sign reads.

“Recipe wishes to thank the employees of the Regent Avenue Fionn MacCool’s for their hard work and service. Recipe also extends gratitude to the guests that have visited this location over the years for their business.”

A spokeswoman for Recipe Unlimited Corporation confirmed the closure in an email to the Free Press Thursday, citing a change of ownership. She did not shed any light on how long the restaurant is expected to be closed.

“We have temporarily closed the Fionn MacCool’s located on 1582 Regent Ave. W due to a change in ownership. We plan to reopen again as soon as possible and apologize for the inconvenience,” the spokeswoman said.

The restaurant was the first Fionn MacCool’s location to set up shop in Winnipeg. It opened its doors for business on Oct. 27, 2014. At the time, it was owned by Paul Belanger, who had been a long time chef for Earl’s Restaurants.

In 2014, a spokesman for the chain’s parent company – which used to operate under the name Cara Operations Ltd. – said there were plans to open up to five Fionn MacCool’s locations in Winnipeg during the next seven years.

“Winnipeg is a great market for us,” said Alex Gerzon, Cara’s vice-president of franchising, at the time. “Our Plan is to build three to five Fionn MacCool’s (in Winnipeg).”

A second location in the parking lot of the Grant Park Shopping Centre was opened in June 2017.

The business describes itself as the “largest Irish-Canadian restaurant brand” and regularly has live music throughout the week.
