A $12-million training centre to prepare people for work in construction and the trades is being built by the Manitoba Building Trades.
The project is one of the largest private sector investment in trades training in Manitoba history, and one of the largest in Canada, the building trades group says.
It will be completely funded by the trades group and its partners, except for $1.4 million in funding from the federal Union Training and Innovation Program (UTIP).
The multi-trade training facility will be located in the city’s core on McPhillips Street near Notre Dame Avenue.
“Our training facility will work directly with employers to provide timely and specific training to prepare a work-ready labour force,” Sudhir Sandhu, the CEO of Manitoba Building Trades, said in a prepared statement.
The goal is to increase the stream of workers with industry-specific training. It will seek to expand and diversify the workforce by training more women, indigenous workers and new Canadians, Sandhu said.
The facility will also be the new corporate headquarters for Manitoba Building Trades and will include classrooms, a lecture theatre, and large trades-specific workshop areas for hands-on learning and work-preparedness training.
Bit Space Development (BSD), a local firm best known for its work in the trades and construction industry, will support the facility’s technology projects using virtual and augmented reality.
Project partner Labourers Union (LiUNA) Local 1258 will be relocating all operations to the new site. Ongoing talks with other interested parties are anticipated to produce other partners in the coming months.
Manitoba Building Trades says its location in the core will be a boost for the community.
The 70,000 square foot facility will be located at 225-235 McPhillips. Renovations are already underway with the expectation to have the facility fully operational by Spring 2020.
Manitoba Building Trades represents more than 8,000 construction and trades professionals in 13 member unions.
MBT began as the Winnipeg Building Trades Council on March 9, 1909.
