Parking at The Forks should be a little less confusing now that the popular destination has added PayByPhone, which is used throughout the city.

PayByPhone is an app that allows motorists to pay for public parking on their smartphone. Until yesterday, The Forks was not using that app; it was linked with lesser known payment apps called Secunik and HonkMobile.

Many people said they found this confusing, because some thought parking was free, while others tried paying through the PayByPhone app.

“We’re just trying to make it as easy as possible for the user,” Clare MacKay, vice-president of corporate and community initiatives at The Forks, said in an interview.

MacKay said The Forks still accommodates users of Securnik and HonkMobile. PayByPhone is just another option. According to Tuesday’s release, PayByPhone has been available through the Winnipeg Parking Authority since 2007 and has seen significant adoption increases from seven per cent in 2016, to 42 per cent as of January 2019.

“We have such a strong user base in Winnipeg and really strive to offer them the best experiences possible,” Roamy Valera, CEO of North America at PayByPhone, said in the release. “Working with (The Forks), PayByPhone is doing just that. We are expanding our footprint to some of the most visited destinations in Winnipeg, making paying for parking much more seamless.”
