The City of Edmonton has ordered 35 clean diesel heavy-duty transit buses from Winnipeg-based New Flyer Industries.

New Flyer, a subsidiary of bus manufacturer NFI Group Inc., announced the new contract for its 60-foot-long Xcelsior buses on Wednesday.

New Flyer said the order would increase passenger capacity on select Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) routes as well as replacing older buses in the public transit system, which delivers more than 80 million rides each year.

Since 1992, Edmonton Transit Service has purchased a total of 1,130 buses from Winnipeg-based New Flyer Industries.
SUPPLIED Since 1992, Edmonton Transit Service has purchased a total of 1,130 buses from Winnipeg-based New Flyer Industries.

The announcement comes after ETS said last month it would be implementing a new bus network by August 2020.

“As North America’s leader in fully accessible, high-capacity transit, New Flyer is pleased to continue supporting ETS as it expands transit across the community with safe, reliable and effective public transportation,” New Flyer president Chris Stoddart said in a news release. “Our high-capacity Xcelsior buses provide more efficient transit solutions while helping to transform the transit experience for Edmonton’s growing community.”

The clean diesel bus engines employ a four-step process that filters harmful emissions from the exhaust in addition to technology that helps lower particulate emissions by 90 per cent and NOx emissions by 95 per cent.

ETS has ordered 1,130 buses from New Flyer since 1992. New Flyer has also provided clean diesel buses of varying lengths to Vancouver and Calgary.
