Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter MacDonald has been chosen to be the next vice-president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons. He will become the group’s president in two years.
The ASES is a group of the top shoulder and elbow surgeons in North America. MacDonald has been involved in the leadership of the organization for many years. He will become only the second Canadian president of ASES, after his longtime friend, mentor and fellow orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard Hawkins.
MacDonald is the head of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Manitoba, the WRHA Surgery Program Medical Director and the Pan Am Clinic chief research and innovation officer.
The Pan Am Clinic Foundation was recently awarded three prizes that distinguish its research from all others. The Arthroscopy Association of North America gave the clinic the Richard O’Connor Award; the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons bestowed the clinic with the Neer Award. Both accolades recognize research that compares different techniques used to reduce the risk of redislocation in shoulders. The foundation was also recognized by the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine when it was awarded the O’Donoghue Award for a collaborative research project between the Pan Am Clinic and the Western University.
As well, MacDonald is the head physician for the Winnipeg Jets, head orthopedic surgeon for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and holds many other fellowships and professional positions.
